| Terrier is a group of dog breeds originating in the British Isles initially bred for hunting and killing vermin (rodents, rabbits and other small game). This group of dogs are typically brave and tough with a lively and energetic personality. The word "terra" (latin) means earth and many Terriers were bred to go to ground to seek out their prey. Once captured they drove the vermin to the surface and quickly did away with them. The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier belongs to the Terrier Group. Originating in Ireland, the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier was bred to be an all-purpose farm dog. They worked the fields during the day and were companions to the household at night. The Soft Coated Wheaten of today is still very much a Terrier. They will chase small animals exhibiting their inherent prey drive. While Wheatens may appear to be less serious appearing than other breeds in the Terrier Group, don't fool yourself! Many Wheatens are now herding certified, will corner small animals and capture birds. For more information on Terriers, please go to the following link: Terriers |
